Women’s Equality Day

Aug 25, 2020 | Become a Provider

On August 18th, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote, was ratified.

The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.

Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

Now, in 2020, we celebrate the 100-year anniversary of this momentous and long-overdue right for women to be heard and their votes counted as they serve in their various roles as active, contributing, and impacted citizens of this country.

Specifically, on August 26th of this year (and each year since 1971), we formally celebrate this milestone as “Women’s Equality Day.” Though many feel that we still have a long way to go towards full equality and that every day we keep pushing forward… on this day, we acknowledge the progress made and contributions of those, along the way, who made it possible (such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, who held the first Woman’s Rights Convention in 1848, which was focused on the social, civil and religious rights of women and specifically addressed women’s rights (including child custody rights) in the event of a divorce)). You can read more about that here.

With that, this month, we wanted to take the opportunity to acknowledge the incredible women who own their own Divorce With Dignity business and are committed to protecting the rights of women (and men, of course), through a fair, peaceful, and equitable divorce process.

Our Founder started DWD, after years in the legal field, because she wanted to help people going through a divorce to do it peacefully – the way she did – and provide a safe place for them to do so. In 1995, she opened the first DWDignity office in Alameda, California and since then, she (along with her expanding network of Providers) has helped thousands of people obtain an amicable divorce.
