What’s it like to be a Divorce With Dignity Provider?

What’s it like to be a Divorce With Dignity Provider? Well, I don’t really know exactly, because I’m not one. But, I do work with them and I’m often tempted to let go of my current (marketing support) gig and use my paralegal background to join the team.

I’ve seen the training and the support that they receive and how the Founder goes out of her way to make sure they are prepared to run their own business. I’ve seen how excited the Providers get about helping someone, who really needed a guide and partner, to get through one of the most difficult phases of their life. All of the Providers have worked in traditional law offices at some point in their careers, and are so grateful to now have the autonomy and control that comes with owning their own business and the direct access to clients — where the real fulfillment comes.

All of them hold office space, and most of them do at least a small portion of their work from home (especially since March). The flexibility of being able to work with clients both remotely and in-person allows each Provider to deliver their services without concerns about such unanticipated restrictions as lockdowns and social distancing — because life happens and life continues to happen, regardless of whether the courts are fully operational, office spaces are accessible, or meeting in person is allowable or advisable.

Our Providers have (sadly) seen an increase in divorce activity since couples have been forced to spend more time together and deal with an insane amount of added stressors… and they were able to be there, when their clients needed them most, via Zoom, email, and over the phone. Some have been able to re-open their offices and serve their clients face-to-face again, while others remain productive working from the comfort of their home offices (or a laptop in their lap in bed, the dining room table, or the couch).

At all times, they choose their own office space, their own support teams, their own technology, and their own schedules. Some start out slowly, while others just dive in (all in). They’re not told that they have to use this model of computer or that, when they have to be in their chairs, when they can take their lunch break, take their kids to school (or be with them, while they school from home), or take a walk. They choose — because they are their own boss.

They do, however, benefit from the comprehensive training they receive at the beginning, as well as the network of DWD colleagues with whom they can collaborate, marketing support, and many administrative inclusions (such as phone line, email account, business cards, web page, software, etc.).*

As a business owner myself for over eight years, I can truly say that there is nothing better. I spent many years in management within large corporations, and I will never go back. I wish I had the launch support that these Providers get when I started my own business.

It can be overwhelming to learn business bookkeeping, set a budget, figure out business operations, create a website, a branded Facebook page, newsletter template, and on and on… but that’s all part of what DWD supports through in-person/online training, their Operations Manual, Training Manual, and marketing launch package.*

With that, I’ll say that in these uncertain times, it’s a great opportunity to be in an industry that’s stable and certain (and not directly related to either death or taxes!).

Founder, Divorce With Dignity
 Network

Our Founder started DWD, after years in the legal field, because she wanted to help people going through a divorce to do it peacefully – the way she did – and provide a safe place for them to do so. In 1995, she opened the first DWDignity office in Alameda, California and since then, she (along with her expanding network of Providers) has helped thousands of people obtain an amicable divorce.
