What Are The Different Types Of Lawyers?

Sep 9, 2015 | Legal Services Jobs

The different types of lawyers that can be hired today would surprise most people.

For those who think one lawyer is as good as the next, they could not be farther from the truth. The practice of law can cover a range of areas, from family matters to litigation to corporate and business and everything in between and each of those specialties requires its own breed of lawyer.

The good news here is that this means there is a multitude of interesting careers in law for those individuals who have a desire to enter the field. Of course, when most people think of lawyers what springs to mind are trial lawyers. Representing litigants in court is an important and exciting part of the legal field but it is far from the whole picture.

Among the different types of lawyers, you find those who actually appear in court and those who do their work from their office. There are business lawyers, who can do everything from handling all of the legal affairs of a corporation to dealing specifically with patent law and contracts. Still other attorneys specialize in bankruptcy and debt, helping financially strapped individuals or companies get out from under their money problems.

One of the more interesting careers in law is that of the civil rights attorney.

These are lawyers who step in to protect individuals whose rights have been violated, be they civil rights, human rights, voting rights or gay and lesbian rights. This work can take place inside or outside of the courtroom and can be very challenging and satisfying when done properly.

Perhaps the most unique of all the different types of lawyers are those who practice family law and estate law.

These are two very personal arenas, covering everything from divorce and adoption to overseeing the drawing up of wills and trusts. Both of these fields necessitate dealing with people over very emotional subjects and require a deft hand.

Of course, when discussing interesting careers in law it is hard to overlook property and real estate lawyers. Overseeing the sale and transfer of property and oftentimes dealing with foreclosure, these attorneys have to have a commanding grasp of all aspects of real estate law and may find themselves stepping in with issues as varied as tenant disputes and arguments with neighbors.

Even when you consider trial law, there are different types of lawyers within this subset.

The most recognizable are the criminal defense attorneys who appear in court to defend those accused of crimes. Another highly visible type is a personal injury attorney. These lawyers, who represent individuals who have been injured in an accident or by a third party, are the ones you see advertising on TV.

As you can see from this brief discussion, there are many interesting careers in law; the only limitation is your own interest and qualifications. If you are considering entering the legal profession, you’ll want to research all of your options and find the career path that best suits you. And with so many to choose from, there should be something for everyone.
